** In Gratitude by Jenny Diski

In Gratitude tells two stories: one of the author’s lung cancer diagnostic and the other of her extraordinary relationship with Doris Lessing, who took her in, surprisingly generously in a way, as a troubled 15-year old, but who also treated her in some surprisingly cruel ways.

I much preferred the relatively smaller part of the memoir when she relates her lucid response to her terrifying diagnostic, with a dry sense of humor, than the Doris Lessing stories, which seem overly vindictive.
