*** The Widow by Fiona Barton

Mixing abusive relationships and pedophilia, The Widow is a psychological thriller critics compare to Gone Girl, somewhat puzzlingly since the ending of Gone Girl is deliciously twisted whereas here we pretty much know from the start what the ending will be — it is just a matter for the detective and the journalist to discover it. Nothing wrong with that, although the story moved a tad slowly for my taste. The heroine, the widow of the title, is a tightly wound mystery of a woman, and the journalist who draws her out is another strong portrait.
