** Brush Back by Sara Paretsy

A troubled family, high-level political corruption, and an Uzbeki mafia man meet in Brush Back, to be sorted out by a female private investigator who seems to have nine lives and no desire to get the police to help. (Of course, if corruption reaches as high as she thinks, she may have a point.) The story did not quite manage to carry me to the end, although it was gripping.
