*** Bike Battles by James Longhurst

Bike Battles: A History of Sharing the American Road focuses on the legal history of bicycles in the U.S., and indeed the legal status of bicycles has determined many decisions of how and whether they can share the road with horses and carriages, and now cars. It reminds us that bicycles started as a hobby of the rich (rich men) rather than a mode of transportation, and as such seemed to need scenic trails rather than bike lanes on regular roads. And it shows how the post-war focus on bicycles for children got them banned from the roads. In between, it shows the role of bicycles as basic transportation during WWII, and features a hilariously sexist picture of a government official transporting his secretary (sic) in the vast front basket of his bicycle.
