*** On the Move by Oliver Sacks

On the Move: A Life is the occasionally messily arranged, but engrossing autobiography of Oliver Sacks, the charismatic doctor and author. What an adventurer he has been, moving to places that interested him (San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York), using various drugs, dabbling in weightlifting, traveling cross-country on a questionable motorbike, and of course finding interesting science in patients everyone else had written off as hopeless.

One wonders how much happier he may have been had he lived in a time in which his homosexuality had been more accepted (his mother’s ghastly reaction when he told her was, “you are an abomination”, and that from a woman who was well-educated and a physician!)
