What Comes Next and How to Like It is a memoir, told in very short to longer segments, of the author’s friendship with a coworker, much complicated, and indeed almost severed by an entanglement with an unexpected third party. The author is able to speak about laughing with her sister about the mundane task of buying spatulas in one entry, and in the next of helping her daughter through a terrifying cancer treatment — both with perfect pitch. It always feels a little creepy to me when memoirists expose their families’ intimate details, but I certainly enjoyed the way she is able to capture moments and nuances in relationships, especially with her children and grandchildren,
