** The Opposite of Spoiled by Ron Lieber

With all kids out of the house, it’s too late me to learn how to raise them… So I picked up  The Opposite of Spoiled: Raising Kids Who Are Grounded, Generous, and Smart About Money more out of curiosity than true need. What I found is a very earnest book with one big principle (talk about money, including sharing your income with your kids) but mostly lots of smaller-scale tips and recommendations on doling out allowances, dealing with requests for expensive clothes, setting a budget for the tooth fairy (I have been stingy, but apparently healthily so for my progeny). It all seemed to be reasonable, self-explanatory, and geared towards wealthy parents, who find that it’s a great strategy to give $100 to each kid for “extras” on a trip to Disney World, as described on page 78 — apparently without irony!
