** 1/2 A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler

A Spool of Blue Thread tells the story of the Whitshanks family, deftly stepping back through the generations to uncover unlikely choices made by mothers and grandmothers in their youth. It’s a rich story with many complex female characters, which I like. I could not quite go to three stars because it seems to be rather staid, despite the long-ago surprises uncovered along the way.
