** Doctored by Sandeep Jauhar

Doctored: The Disillusionment of an American Physician paints a very dark picture of the American health system. The author, a cardiologist, describes how he has been pressured to order unnecessary and costly tests, make unnecessary referrals in surely corrupt cross-physician arrangements, and even sign off on pointless surgical procedures to line colleagues’ pockets — all costly moves for health insurances, including Medicare, that is us, the taxpayers, since most patients are elderly and, worse, harmful actions for patients. There is not much hope in this personal tale, except for his sweet relationship with his young son and the kind care he provides his patients (at least when he is not busy over-prescribing!) It’s enough to make you question every doctor’s recommendation you’ve ever gotten.
