With its tantalizing subtitle, The Narcissist Next Door: Understanding the Monster in Your Family, in Your Office, in Your Bed-in Your World half-delivers. The author has an entertaining style but some of the chapters seem to meander away from the main topic, towards other problematic characters and especially the always fascinating psychopaths. Still, it’s interesting to take the official narcissism test, thoughtfully provided in the appendix, to see if one scores higher than MBA candidates (high), violent offenders (higher), or actors (highest). It’s a little strange to think that so many people think that they are the center of the world! As someone who occasionally thinks that I could turn around a few failing institutions, I managed to get a score so low that the book advised me to boost my self-esteem. Still laughing about that one! No acting career for me, I guess.
