* 1/2 Constance by Patrick McGrath

Constance is a very dark novel about a depressed young woman who is misled by her father and oppressed by her husband, who is, not coincidently, much older than she is. I spent the entire time I was reading the story rooting for her and hoping that she would find some spine, but alas she seems unable to make her own way, away from her nemeses, even though she appears to have a solid job — but the story is set in the early 60s and it’s perhaps too early for a young woman to assert herself? A disappointing portrait of a woman.
