** The Scent of Pine by Lara Vapnyar

The Scent of Pine alternates, rather ungainly, between the boring and somewhat bewildering marital tribulations of the heroine and  her wonderfully fresh memories of her summer as a camp counselor in the USSR, complete with mysterious disappearances and a corrupt head counselor. The past is, of course, much more fascinating than the present and I kept hoping that we could get more of it!
