*** The Village by Nikita Lalwani

The Village‘s narrator is a young Indian-British woman who is directing a documentary on a prison that allows convicted murderers to live in a small Indian village, along with their families, and are allowed to lead quite normal, if highly regimented lives. The story takes her from arrival to failure as she and her two colleagues befriend the inmates and their families, and our heroine finds it harder and harder to distinguish between her professional aims and the friendships she weaves, especially as she is the only Indian on the team, with much less freedom as a result. Her slow descent into professional and personal paralysis is fascinating.
