How McGruff and the Crying Indian Changed America: A History of Iconic Ad Council Campaigns┬áreviews well-known ad campaigns and how they came to be. The author starts with one we all think we know, Rosie the Riveter, and, surprise! despite the uber-fame of the poster it was never a public campaign but rather an internal motivational poster for Westinghouse. Who knew? But there are many stories of war propaganda efforts along with Smokey the Bear and “A mind is a terrible thing to waste” — and interesting asides about the choice made by the Ad Council, for instance urging Americans not to be litterbugs without ever mentioning the overabundance of packaging that creates at least part of the problem…
