After Visiting Friends: A Son’s Story tells the story of the author’s sleuthing into the death of his father, which occurred during the author’s childhood and was simply described as occurring “while visiting friends”. Of course there is a story behind that, and it’s exactly the one we might suspect. Along the way is told the story of his pattens and his upbringing, and how his father’s brother covered up for him, quite literally, by arranging things with the Chicago police. Some of the vignettes are wonderful, including the apparently not so helpful guardians of the medical records at the hospital to which his father was taken. The story goes on just a little too slowly and a little too long for my taste, but it’s well told.
