*** The Hour Between Dog and Wolf by John Coates

What if the crazy gyrations of the stock market were nothing more than… hormones? The Hour Between Dog and Wolf: Risk Taking, Gut Feelings and the Biology of Boom and Bust, written by a financial trader turned neurologist (there can’t be too many of those, right?) makes this claim, and backs it up with a good number of examples, taken right from the trading floor. For me, the best part of the book was the inside view into how trading is organized, from how selling and trading are specialized functions to how the various international desks work with each other, to how compensation is structured (and emphasizes short-term success, creating steeper peaks and valleys). A wonderful window into Wall Street from a psychological perspective.
