** Canada by Richard Ford

The apparently middle class, responsible, but financially-challenged parents of the hero rob a bank and then arrange to ship him off to the Canada of the title to avoid the foster care system. The story is told through flashbacks by the resilient teenager, whose voice is as calm as the prairie where he lives. I found the complete absence of grandparental involvement puzzling and the logistics of the escape rather unbelievable, but otherwise the story is full of shrewd observations of the (mis)behaviors of adults.
