I was hoping that Made by Hand: Searching for Meaning in a Throwaway World would be a reflection on why people like crafts. Alas, only a few pages qualify as such, with the rest containing the author’s adventures in DIY, including an interminable description of his clumsy attempts to build a chicken coop. It could be funny, as in the AJ Jacobs’s adventures, but it’s just boring, with very occasional flashes of humor. Too bad, I could identify with his description of the calming effects of hands-on work.
(I thought I had sworn off ratings with half stars… but apparently I can’t help myself!)
