** The O’Briens by Peter Behrens

The O’Briens is a satisfying saga of a resourceful Canadian orphan who takes care of his sibling after his father abandons them and his mother dies, builds a business empire, and improbably marries a wealthy woman with whom he builds his own family, and multiple adventures ensue, following the big themes of the 20th century in Canada and the US: the epic building of the transcontinental railroads, prohibition, the wars. I did not find anything absolutely remarkable in the story, but it certainly reads well and serves up a number of characters with more depth that the story itself.
