** On Black Sisters Street by Chika Unigwe

On Black Sisters Street is the very sad tale of four Nigerian (or pretend-Nigerian) sex workers in Antwerp, who came to Belgium more or less aware of the fate that awaited them but not of the quasi-imprisonment and daily humiliations they suffer at the hands of their madam. When one of them is killed as she was poised to escape, their stories rush out, complete with dire poverty, child sexual abuse, rape, and children that are left behind. It’s a very depressing book, with seemingly no bright or hopeful spot whatsoever.
