* The Honor code by Kwame Anthony Appiah

I am puzzled about The Honor Code. Perhaps it is because it’s written by a professor of philosophy and deep thinking has never been my hobby — but actually what I missed in this book is deep thinking! It seems that the author wants to explain how practices like duelling or foot binding can exist for a long time before quite suddenly disappearing as public opinion finally coalesces around a new way of thinking. While his extensive historical knowledge is impressive, it seems to me that a much more compelling (and entertaining!) argument can be found in the recent book The Tipping Point — which also sets to suggest practical ways to hasten tipping, which seems to be the point for honor killings and other horrors.
