The Lifeboat is an old-fashioned Victorian novel featuring a dramatic shipwreck (on the eve of WWI, to add to the melodrama), a potentially money-grabbing wife, the Lord of the Flies
-like setting of a cramped lifeboat, and the clumsily grafted trial that follows the eventual rescue. Want to drop the book yet? Wrong, you would be losing out on a wonderful story of crowd psychology and harrowing survival that will make you feel the sodden skirts and cracked lips of the heroine. Brilliant, if unassuming.
