The Story Sisters by Alice Hoffman

If I were smart I would stop reading books that feature demons and fairies, but I persevered despite the clear warning on the very first page. OF the three Story Sisters, one is disturbed following a childhood molestation incident her parents know nothing about and the other two suffer her increasing troubles mostly by covering up for her, which means her weak mother and her absent father are very slow to take action and when they do it’s too late and rather mistaken. Her seemingly capable and attentive grandmother also joins in the deception so very bad consequences ensue — until a mysterious conversion happens and the doomed sister, apparently without any help, unexpectedly turns into a responsible mom (albeit supported financially by her grandmother.)

The problem is that I just could not (1) believe the story or (2) care very much for any of the characters, even the vulnerable younger sister. And please no more Paris as a heaven of grace and refined living. It’s only a myth.
